FOR THOSE THAT EARN TEN THUMBS UP
* the various boxing lists re. British Columbia boxers and builders
Top Names in BC Boxing 1960 to 1989
Note: a name on a list does not assume or indicate they are the
the best boxers, coaches and officials, or imply they were the
most active.
Throughout the decades, British Columbia has carved an interesting chapter in the Canadian Amateur Boxing history book. "BOXING in BC" will attempt to tell or outline slices of that history and touch on the here and now such as club shows in British Columbia, Provincial tournaments and the involvement of BC boxers in National and International events. And follow some of the champions such as Ken Lally, Stefn Melideo, and Jessy Brown and other stars or fallen stars.

it takes us back to the first complete decade of

of the names such as:
Tommy Paonessa, Vic Murdoch, Eddie Haddad
and Elio Ius, but it also begins the story of those
such as Jimmy Walters. With these five early names
they are all different but along the way they
helo to connect the other inductees and the many folks
that have been or are still involved in amateur boxing.

Professional Boxing in British Columbia
PROFESSIONAL BOXING IN BC:
Introduction:
* Professional boxing in
British Columbia has always
been a hit and miss affair.
But, despite the many low
points, there have been
some interesting moments
when we go back in time.
* Some may argue, that the
last great pro boxing card
was the one in 1972 that
featured Muhammad Ali
and George Chuvalo in the main event and Clyde Gray and Manuel
Gonzalez in the semi-main event with other bouts that would lead
to the two key bouts.
Looking beyond 1972, there have been various pro cards in places
like Nanaimo, Vancouver, Victoria and elsewhere. Two that
cover the eighties and nineties include the following two:
These two pro cards were a decade apart, but the one
common name in both of them was boxer TONY PEP.
Some of the other boxers include some former good
amateur boxers from British Columbia and other locations
in Canada. Some old familiar names include:
Manny Sobral, Donny Lalonde, George Sponagle,
Shane Sutcliffe, Michael Olajide, Al Ford, and
Jamie Ollenberger. Ollenberger was one of the few
amateur boxers to be named BC Golden Boy twice.
