Professional Boxing in British Columbia

PROFESSIONAL BOXING IN BC:

By Brian Zelley

Introduction:
* Professional boxing in
British Columbia has always
been a hit and miss affair.
But, despite the many low
points, there have been
some interesting moments
when we go back in time.

* Some may argue, that the
last great pro boxing card
was the one in 1972 that
featured Muhammad Ali
and George Chuvalo in the main event and Clyde Gray and Manuel
Gonzalez in the semi-main event with other bouts that would lead
to the two key bouts.

Looking beyond 1972, there have been various pro cards in places
like Nanaimo, Vancouver, Victoria and elsewhere.  Two that
cover the eighties and nineties include the following two:

These two pro cards were a decade apart, but the one
common name in both of them was boxer TONY PEP.
Some of the other boxers include some former good
amateur boxers from British Columbia and other locations
in Canada.  Some old familiar names include:
Manny Sobral, Donny Lalonde, George Sponagle,
Shane Sutcliffe, Michael Olajide, Al Ford, and
Jamie Ollenberger.  Ollenberger was one of the few
amateur boxers to be named BC Golden Boy twice.

has been an active and positive force in amateur boxing
with numerous hosted boxing cards and the hosting of one
of the annual tournaments and being ready, willing and
able to travel to other boxing cards and tournaments.

Special consideration should
 also be given to boxer
RAY BEAULIEU who has

administrators for the BC Amateur
Boxing Hall of Fame
since it's beginning in 2010.

THE PRE-EVENT BUZZ:
*There will be various clubs that will take part in this show including
Betty Clarke's  Shaolin Boxing Club of Prince George.  Also expected

the event Canadian champion KEN LALLY is expected to appear from
Prince George to put on an exhibition with  his club mate JAG SEEHRA.

The first story has appeared in the Quesnel Cariboo Observor

Erin Dale, Zayd Jaffi and Devon Star along with a couple of others with
experience such as Dan Mott and Kyle Tessier.

Ring Officials:
One of the ring officials that is expected to be in attendance is
Vicky McLellan of Williams Lake.  A likely referee should be Ian Gibson.

FLASHBACKS:

Every boxing club has a story and a beginning, for the original and
early members of the club they should be recognized and praised
for being there to start the never ending journey down the
twisting and turning boxing highway.

*Remember when, the club hosted a show in May of  2011 which would be in
memory of KELLY MOONEY and three of the stars of the show from 2 Rivers

would be Dan Mott, Devin Mooney and Ray Beaulieu with competition from
such places as Prince George, Williams Lake and the Queensborough club
of New Westminster (that is an old club that was started by the late
Frankie Scott, 1966 bronze medal winner of the Commonwealth Games.

Recent Flashbacks - A Moment of Glory

From the rich treasure chest of Golden Moments
and threads of silver, will be a few moments of
glory for the 2 Rivers boxing.  In recent times,
see the boxer and his own piece of glory that
can be added to the deep places of the
"2 Rivers Boxing Club's Treasure Chest.

WALLY DOERN, the Head Coach

Wlally Doern, the head coach of
the boxing club arrived back
in Quesnel a couple of years
ago to revive his old club
the 2 Rivers Boxing Club.

Prior to the revival, Wally had
had many excellent achievements
as a coach in Quesnel and some
of the former boxers would return
to the club to be part of the great revival.  And it did not take long for
the lads from 2 Rivers to be an active part of amateur boxing in
British Columbia, and would be part of the return to boxing for
Victoria, BC when the Capital City boxing club hosted the
2010 Golden Gloves.  (photo at the Golden Gloves includes
BOB PEGUES, a former Nanaimo boxer of the Seventies and
now a Prince George coach who trains top ranked boxers
Kenny Lally and Jag Seehra, and 2 Rivers Coach WALLY DOERN).

WOMEN IN BOXING

WOMEN IN BOXING: 2012 Nominees for
BRITISH COLUMBIA AMATEUR BOXING
HALL of FAME:  By Brian Zelley, administrator

*What began in 2010 has expanded in 2010 to include a category
for women in boxing.  For 2012, the first ever women nominees
are builder MARGARET O'REILLY and
the boxer MANDY LAPOINTE.

Although the selection process is taking place in June 2012
it is expected that both Marg and Mandy will be the first
two women in boxers to be recognized as inductees.
Marg's husband, the late Pat O'Reilly was the founder
of the Hasting's Community Centtre boxing club which
operated for a few decades in Vancouver.  Mandy LaPointe
is a former amateur boxer and current professional boxer
from Prince George.

Following the completion of the process that is expected
to be complete on or before July 1, 2012 the appropriate
announcement will be made.

The importance of this will coincide with another historical
moment for Women in Boxing when women boxers will
compete in the 2012 London summer olympic games.
The Canadian boxer MARY SPENCER is the lone
woman boxer to compete in London and one of her
toughest competitors will be the English boxer but
the USA boxer Clarissa Shields with a victory over Mary will also
be a medal threat. In the other weight divisions, one of the
expected medal winners is Ireland's Katie Taylor.

Women in Boxing in British Columbia
In decades past, many women involved with boxing were often in
various volunteer roles such as the women's auxiliary or helping
out at boxing shows.  Over time some would serve as a board
member for Boxing BC such as Marg O'Reilly, Shirley Knopp
Jean Bayne and many others.  And, in the Nineties there would be
women's boxing in amateur bouts.

Some of the names of women involved in the auxiliary were
Jean Bayne, Nadine Bayne, Audrey Wilson, Stella Fuller,
Carole Brown and ida Smith.
